The back rest's form lightens the weight of the chair by eliminating the use of balsa wood.

The combination of wire and balsa wood makes the chair lighter. However the back rest wire frame would not be enough support for the back.

Esquisse 3 - Form vs Function

The curves in the first chair compliments the human form. The downside of this chair is that it might not support the weight of a person.

The second chair is practical, simple and easy to carry.
